Performance Trap

My 8 year old daughter and I were driving home today. Just the two of us. We turned the radio off, the MP3 player off, the cell phone off, the CD/DVD player off -- and we talked ;-) We are doing the Samaritans Purse Christmas Child Shoe box thing. We were returning from the store after getting (using her money too ;-) the stuff for her Christmas Child.

She turned to me in all seriousness and asked, “Hey Daddy, would you like it if you could be in more than one place at one time?” I thought she was talking about being Omnipresent – you know God's ability to be everywhere at the same time. I wasn't sure how to answer her - I was wondering how I could relate this hard-for-adults-to-understand concept to an 8 year old.... So I stalled by simply saying, “Sure Honey, I think that would be way cool. Why?”

She said, 'Well if you had a clone, they could work and you could spend more time with me and Thomas (her brother).”

“Really”, I said, “How would that work?”

She replied, “Your clone could put your phone-thingy headset on and spend all day talking on the phone. Then he could be on the computer all night working like you do now. That way you could spend your time with Momma and me and Thomas. Good idea right?”

As I type this, it's hard to see the keyboard for the tears. What a putz I am.

For most American men, if we did have a clone, I wonder where we would send him – to our job site or to our house?

That hits home for alot of us workaholics, especially if we are workaholics for the Lord.
